We Were Once Fish

I like eating dinner for breakfast

and breakfast for dinner.

I like the smell of rain in the air.

I like counting the gulps of water I drink.

I like staring out the car window

and daydream.

I like holding one long breath,

sinking down into the pool,

and staying as still as possible

for as long as possible.

I used to wonder

if that stillness was death.

But after carrying life,

babe flashing like a fish on the screen,

I wonder —

if it’s the before.

I like thinking

we live in a circle,

rippling outward

patiently,

endlessly,

through space and time,

only to fold back

inward

into each other.

I like believing

I recognized you first.
