B.F.A Fine Arts - Thesis Show
Project type
Ceramic Thesis
Date
2012
Location
Florida State University
This was my ceramic thesis project. It was showcased at our final exhibition alongside the other graduating artists. The project itself consists of 3 large vessels made on a wheel with porcelain. Inside they hold porcelain dumplings dipped in wax and various ones have hair on it as well. They sit in the vessels submerged by water.
The large vessels act as bodies, carrying culture and identity. The visual appeal of floating dumplings in water entice the viewer but the hair and some body parts disfigure the dumpling and act as a way to repulse the viewer. This embodies the push and pull of an identity in between. In this case, me, between cultures, using metaphors of large chinese pots, food, and hair as identity in women, culture, etc...
I definitely could have spent more time and discipline on this, but I was young and dumb. Either way, I am satisfied how it turned out.
